LATISSE ENHANCES LASHES DURING CHEMOTHERAPY
Plastic Surgeon Uses NEW Product to Address Eyelash Loss In Patients Undergoing Treatment for Cancer
The Practice of Louis P. Bucky MD, Plastic Surgery, cares for cosmetic surgery patients and breast reconstruction patients. Occasionally, innovations on the cosmetic side can have a major impact on the reconstructive side of the practice. Within the practice’s own staff, Dr. Bucky’s head nurse, Lisa Holloway, has been undergoing treatment for breast cancer over the last few months. Chemotherapy has led to the loss of her hair and eyelashes. Lisa started using Latisse, a prescription based eyelash lengthener (by Allergan, the makers of Botox), about seven weeks. ago for her eyelashes. The regrowth has been amazing. Latisse™ (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) 0.03% is a new innovation in eyelashes that is available for purchase or prescription at select physician offices. Latisse is the first and only prescription treatment approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for cosmetic patients that is used to grow eyelashes, making them longer, thicker and darker. Dr. Bucky’s practice has been successfully using Latisse “off-label” for our breast cancer chemotherapy patients.
Many patients undergoing chemotherapy do struggle with eyelashes and eyebrows falling out, thinning, and loss of length. This phenomenon can happen even several years later.
The practice has been recommending to breast reconstruction patients that they begin Latisse. It has had a major impact on the patient’s well-being.
“The opportunity to apply a cosmetic innovation like Latisse to our breast cancer patients and improve their body image during this difficult period is extremely rewarding.” said physician Louis P. Bucky, MD
